Fashion design is the application of art devoted to the design of clothing and lifestyle accessories created within the cultural and social influences of a specific time. Adeline André, Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix, Emanuel Ungaro, Jean Paul Gaultier, Elie Saab, Giorgio Armani, and Valentino are some of the world famous fashion houses who became members of the haute couture in 2007. For most of these fashion houses, custom clothing is no longer the chief source of income, often costing much more than it earns through direct sales; the fashion houses mostly ventures in ready-to-wear clothing and related luxury products such as shoes and perfumes, and licensing ventures that earn greater returns for the company.

Fashion houses also design clothing and accessories for men and women. Most of high-fashion designers are self-employed and design for individual clients. While some of the fashion house cater to specialty stores or high-fashion department stores. The designers create original garments. Fashion houses under designer brands like that of Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren are likely to be designed by a team of individual designers under the direction of a designer director.
