What is Hardware?

Hardware, in general, has got two meanings. The term, Hardware, is used for computer related products on one hand, and on the other had, the term is also used for metal goods and utensils which we regularly use in our daily life, such as locks, tools and cutlery etc. The term Hardware is also used in machines and other physical equipment which are directly involved in performing an industrial, technological, or military function. These two terms of Hardware are completely different from each other. Therefore, to tell more details about Hardware, it is necessary to describe the two forms of Hardware separately.

Hardware in Computer

Nowadays, when we hear the term Hardware, the first thing that comes to our mind is computer. The term Hardware has completely been attached with the computers these days. Computer Hardware the the physical parts of a computer. These parts, including the digital circuitry, constitute the whole system of the computer. Each of the parts of the computer Hardware has their own identity. Computer Hardware keep changing frequently. You can choose different Hardware parts to customize your personal computer. You can add on any Hardware equipment at any later stage. Similarly you can also change, or substitute any Hardware part with the better version at any point of time. The computer Hardware technology is changing in a very rapid speed. As more advanced technologies are coming up, the cost of the computer Hardware parts are decreasing day by day.

Where can we find Hardware?

Unlike the computer softwares, one can see and feel the computer Hardware parts. But, usually, the normal users can not see those, because they are kept inside. The Hardware could be found in the embedded systems in automobiles, microwave ovens, electrocardiograph machines, compact disc player and many other devices. In personal computer, the Hardware parts are kept in a box called cabinet. Once you open the cabinet, you can see all the parts of computer Hardware.

Types of Hardware

There are various sorts of computer Hardware available these days. With the advent of new technologies, we can see new Hardware almost every day for the personal computers. A typical Personal Computer has a chassis called cabinet which contains all the Hardware parts of the computer. Inside the cabinet, one can find the motherboard which is the heart of the computer and all the Hardware parts are placed on it. CPU or the Central Processing Unit is the brain of the computer which controls and coordinates all the operations. Besides this, a personal computer also has computer fan, power supply unit, memories like Random Access Memory (RAM), Read Only Memory (ROM), Storage devices like Hard disk, floppy disk, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, Zip Drive, removable storage devices, video display unit, sound card, keyboard, mouse, network card, modem, and a range of many more Hardware devices.

Instrumentality

The other sorts of Hardware is the instrumentality which are usually made up of metals. We use many of these Hardware in our daily life. Metal goods and utensils are the examples of these. Hardware is also used in military weapons.
