Classified advertising is a type of advertising that is popular in newspapers, online on the Internet and other periodicals. Classified advertising differs from the conventional advertising in that it allows individuals (not just companies or corporates to promote products and services. Classified advertising is text based and consists of as little as the item being sold and a phone number. There are mostly no pictures or graphics in the advertisement. A combination of two forms called display classifieds advertising can be found, in which advertisements with more graphical detail can be found among the text listings of a classified advertising section.
Classifieds can have more detail, such as name and address to contact, more complete description of the product or products (same with services). In display classifieds, sometimes a logo may be used.
Classified advertising has the name classifieds as where it is published, it is classified under headings (sections) such as Automobiles, Clothing, Agri Produce, For Sale, For Rent and much more. This makes it different from display classifieds, which contains graphics or some art work and is distributed throughout a publication next to editorial content. Display classifieds in some cases may contains graphic information such as photographs and location maps.
Business persons use classifieds to sell their services, with 1-800 numbers. Classified advertising is also popular in employment recruitment. Printed classified ads are usually just a few column lines in length, and often filled with abbreviations to save space and money.
