Carnaval, also called carnival, is celebrated in many places throughout South America. Carnaval, as spelled in Portuguese, is a 4-day celebration. It starts on Saturday and ends on Fat Tuesday . Dates change every year, but it's always a noisy, energetic celebration of music and dance and exhibitions. One of the top events in south America. French Guiana is the only non-independent country on the South American mainland. As an overseas department of France, it is governed by French law and the French constitution, and enjoys French customs, currency and holidays. Bastille Day, celebrated annually on July 14, is a major holiday in French Guiana as it is in France and other French territories. The holiday celebrates the 1789 storming of the Bastille prison in Paris. Mobs of people took over the prison and literally dismantled it, a foreshadowing of what would happen to the French aristocracy in the coming revolution. Heralding the beginning of the French Revolution, the tearing down of the Bastille became a symbol of the building of a new France, one where power no longer resided in God, the King, or the aristocracy, but in the people themselves. Columbus Day, also known as Native American Day is celebrated on October 12 or the nearest Monday to it, is traditionally celebrated throughout the Americas as the day Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492. In English speaking countries, the day is celebrated as Columbus Day or Native American Day. In Spanish speaking countries and communities, is is known as "Dia de la Raza", the Day of the Race. November 1st is celebrated throughout the Catholic world as "Dia de Todos Santos", or All Saints Day, to honor all the saints, known and unknown, of the Catholic faithful. This one major holy day honors them all, including those who had died in a state of grace but had not been canonized. And, to keep things fair, November 2 is celebrated as the Day of All Souls. The dating for the Easter celebrations in the Christian church has long been a matter of some discussion and controversy depending on the dating calendar in use. The dating is traditionally the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21.
The festival of the Virgen de la Candelaria, in many images, is celebrated on February 2 in various Hispanic Catholic countries, including Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Venezuela and Uruguay.
