The UAE, United Arab Emirates, is a federation of seven states in Middle East Asia. The UAE is located on the Persian Gulf, in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia. It borders Oman and Saudi Arabia. The seven states, called emirates, are Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Ajman, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain
The UAE is rich in oil and does not have any other natural resources. The UAE has foreign direct investment, something which has made it a prosperous state. The Emirates are highly developed in comparison to other Middle East and Asian countries and competes globally too with a High Development Index.
Prior to 1971, the UAE were called Trucial Oman or Trucial States as per a truce in the mid-nineteenth between Britain and many Arab Sheikhs. The area embraced Islam in the seventh century and is renowned for being home to companions of Islamic Prophet Muhammad. Parts of the nation came under the Ottoman Empire's direct during the sixteenth century. The region came to be known as the Pirate Coast from the seventeenth to nineteenth century. The relationship with the British continued for more than a century.

In the early 1960s, even though oil was not discovered in Dubai, this progress exceed that of was ahead of all the other states even though oil was not yet discovered in its territories, it continued to progress economically, ahead of the other states. The population of UAE has an unnatural sex distribution with more than twice the number of males than females. The gender imbalance of the UAE is the highest in the world. Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and Saudi Arabia follow. All of them, incidentally, together comprise the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The GCC is referred to as the Gulf.
The economic opportunities and high living standards of the UAE attract a large number of Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis , Nepalese and Sri Lankans.
The most populated city is Abu Dhabi, with some 2 million people. Other major cities are include Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah and Al Ain with 88% urban population.
Almost all citizens are Muslims of whom 98 percent are Sunni and remaining 2 percent Shi'a. Despite no reporting of official figures, it is reckoned that 86 percent of the foreign population are Sunni Muslim, 7 percent are Hindu, 4 percent are Christian, 2 percent are Buddhist, and 1 percent belong to other religions.
Traditional sports such as camel racing are popular in UAE and new sports such as golf have been introduced with two European Tour events. The world's richest horse race, the Dubai World Cup, is held in UAE. Football is immensely popular in the UAE. The UAE also has some interesting man-made attractions such as the world's tallest building making is one of the popular tourist destinations in Asia.
