Turkey

The official name of Turkey is the Republic of Turkey. The country of Turkey belongs to the Eurasian region that covers the Anatolian peninsula of the western part of Asia and Thrace which belongs to the Balkan region of the southeastern part of Europe. Turkey is bordered by as many as eight countries. To the northwest of Turkey is located Bulgaria, to the west you will find Greece, to the northeast sits the country of Georgia and the eastern part of Turkey is bordered by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran. Southeast of the country is bordered by Syria and Iraq. The southern part of the country is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus. The western shores of Turkey are washed by the Aegean Sea and Archipelago and to the north is the Black Sea. The country is separated from Anatolia and Thrace by the Turkish Straits and the Sea of Marmara which also make the country transcontinental.

One of the most interesting features about Turkey is its strategic location which has had a major impact on the culture of the country. Turkey has an unique blend of culture which reflects both the Western and Eastern tradition. The country has a great influence in the Central part of Asia, in the European Union, Russia and the Middle East both culturally and economically. The name of the country -Turkey has been derived from the Turkish language where Turk means "strong".

However there are many arguments related to the etymology of the name of the country and is also believed to have originated from an English name or Chinese word.Turkey happens to be the parliamentary representative democratic country and this is in full force and function since it was established as a republic in the year 1923. This is strongly secular country and the constitution forms the legal backbone of the country. It sets out the main principles of government and establishes Turkey as a unitary centralized state.

The territory of Turkey stretches more than 1,600 kilometers in length and 800 km in width and has a rough rectangular shape. It happens to be 37th largest country in the world and is size is almost equal to the size of the Metropolitan France and United Kingdom taken together.

Mt. Ararat which is 16,946 ft high happens to be the highest peak in the country. The diverse geography of the country only adds to the natural glamour of the Turkey and makes it one of the popular tourist attractions in Europe. The country is characterized by the typical Mediterranean temperate climate. The country has summers which are hot and dry and has winters which are wet and cold.
