The Commonwealth of Kentucky or more popularly known as Kentucky is the state of United State of America, located in the East Central part of the country. Though the state Kentucky is usually included in the group of Southern states, but it sometimes also geographically and culturally included in the Midwest. Kentucky is bordered by West Virginia to the east, Virginia to the southeast, Tennessee to the south, Missouri to the west, Illinois and Indiana to the northwest, and Ohio to the north and northeast. Kentucky was originally a part of Virginia and became the 15th state in the USA to join the Union in the year 1792. The state is one of the four US states which has been known as a commonwealth. This state of USA is the 37th largest in terms of area and 26th in terms of population.

Kentucky is the land of bluegrass and hence is called as the "Bluegrass State". One can find bluegrass in the lawns and pastures throughout the state. Kentucky is the land of diverse environments which has got a number of resources. One can find the longest cave system of the world in this state. Kentucky also has got the two largest man-made lakes in the east of Mississippi river. The state is also known for the thoroughbred horses, horse racing, bourbon distilleries, bluegrass music, tobacco, college basketball, automobile manufacturing etc. Kentucky has also go the most productive coalfield of the United States.

Geography of Kentucky

The US state of Kentucky has a total area of 40,444 square miles of which 1.7 percent is water body. The state had a width of 140 miles and has a length of 379 miles. Geographically, Kentucky is divided into five primary regions, viz. the Cumberland Plateau in the east, the north-central Bluegrass region, the south-central and wester Pennyroyal Plateau, the Western Coal Fields, and the far west Jackson Purchase. The Bluegrass region again has two parts, the Inner Bluegrass which encircles 90 miles around Lexington, and the Outer Bluegrass, much of which is in the Eden Shale Hills area that is made up of short, steep and extremely narrow hills, contains most of the northern portion of the state, above the Knobs.

Climate of Kentucky
Being located within the southeaster interior of the North America, Kentucky has got a humid subtropical climate which means, the state has got all the monthly average temperatures above the freezing. During the summer, the monthly average temperature during the day time remains at 87 degree Fahrenheit. During the winter, the monthly average temperature goes down to 23 degree Fahrenheit. The average rainfall in the state is 46 inches in a year.
One can find all the four seasons available in the state of Kentucky. It is often seen that the temperature and the weather conditions change drastically within the same day in the state.
