About New York

New York (NY) is a state of United States of America, located in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the country. The state is surrounded by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. New York also shares a water border with the Rhode Island and an international border with Quebec and Ontario of Canadian provinces. New York City is the third most populous state of the United States of America after California and Texas with a population of 19,306,183 as of the year 2006.

History of the City

The history of the New York State goes back to the early 17th century when the Dutch and French nationals came into the region and the city was inhabited by the Algonquian, Iroquois, and the Lenape Native American groups. First claimed by Henry Hudson in 1609 and later was colonized by the Dutch in 1624, the region finally fell to British annexation in 1664. New York has been the place for revolutionary war as almost one third of all the revolutionary wars took place in this city. Finally, New York got the independence and became an independent state on July 9, 1776. A year later, the constitution of the state was enacted. On July 26, 1788, New York ratified the United States Constitution to become the 11th state.

Geography

New York is the 27th largest state of USA in terms of size, with a total area of 54,475 square miles (141,089 square km). In the eastern part of the city is dominated by the Great Appalachian Valley, while one can find the presence of Hudson River flowing southward to the Atlantic Ocean. The Adirondack Mountains lie on the west, while the majority of the southern part of the state lies on the Allegheny plateau. Unlike the urban atmosphere of the New York City, the majority of the state in dominated by farms, forests, rivers, mountains and lakes. Niagara Falls on the Niagara River, which flows from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, is one of the most popular tourist destinations of New York.

Climate
The climate of New York is humid continental in nature which usually prevails in the northeastern United States. The lakes, ocean, rivers, and mountains have a great role to play on the climate of this province of United States. The New York state enjoys a pleasantly warm summer when the temperature ranges between upper 70s to mid 80s degrees Fahrenheit. During the winter, the temperature may go down to -13 degree Fahrenheit or even lower.
