Kiribati comprises a geographical area of 3,500,000 square kilometers which include a raised coral island and 32 atolls. Kiribati is also known as the Gilberts Island, its pre-independence name. Kiribati or the Republic of Kiribati is a part of the Micronesia sub region of Oceania and borders the International Date Line in its East. Kiribati is one of the largest island nations inside the geographical area of Oceania and is equal to the continental United States in size. Kiribati is located right in between the Hawaii Islands and Australia. The geographical area of Kiribati includes several archipelago among which the most important are Phoenix Islands, the Line Islands and the Gilberts Islands. Besides, Kiribati also include Kiritimati, the largest coral atoll in the world and Banaba, the great phosphate rock island in the Pacific Ocean.
The history of Kiribati is very interesting. According to archaeologists and historians, Kiribati was inhabited by Micronesian ethnic group 2000 years before Europeans arrived there. Kiribati Islands was visible to British and American ships between late 18th and early 19th century. It was in the year 1820, that the island was named as Gilberts Islands by Adam von Krunestern, a Russian admiral and Louis Duperrey, French captain.
The reason why the island was named as Gilbert wads that British captain Thomas Gilbert had crossed th archipelago in the year 1788. it must also be mentioned here that British people started settling here in the year 1837. in the year 1916, Gilberts and Ellice Islands was turned into a French colony and Kiritimati, the largest coral atoll of the world was included in it three year later.

Tourist spots are scattered all over Kiribati but among all the most popular places that are visited by lot of people are the beautiful town of Tarawa, the Bairaki Islands, that houses the government houses, Parliament building, central post office, archives, banks, the residence and the office of the President, the Betio Island, Abaiang, Abemama and Butaritari.
