Cargo Ships

Speaking of cargo ships, we mean ships that carry cargo or goods from one port to another. Each country has their own fleet of cargo ships that helps in delivering of goods from one place to another through the water bodies. A huge percentage of international trade depends on the cargo ships operating throughout the seas and oceans every year. The cargo ships are often equipped with cranes and other machines to unload and load goods of all size and weight. Here we will be discussing about the cargo ships and its related issues.

Cargo ships are in use from ancient age when trade and commerce was totally dependent on ships which formed the most important form of transportation. There are various types of cargo ships that operate in modern age. Some of the popular categories of cargo ships are as follows:

Mail and supply ships: These ships are used to carry mails, supplies and cargoes that are of far of locations.

General cargo ships: These ships carry bulk goods that include steel, rolls of wire and machinery for example. Not only these items, general cargo ships also carry boxed goods.

Containerships: These cargo ships carry box items that are generally containers which are twenty to forty foot in length. These boxes can carry any type of goods, for example, television to fruits and meats.

Expedition ships: By expedition ship, we mean passenger ships which can carry from 52 to 117 passengers. These ships go on voyage at the Antarctic, South Georgia and the Falklands, Patagonia, Islands of the South Atlantic, the Amazon, Iceland, Greenland, the Northwest Passage, Hudson Bay, plus Lost Islands of the South Pacific, Polynesia, Melanesia and the Russian Far East

Bulk Carriers: Bulk carrier cargo ships carry weighty items such as grains, coals, phosphates and many other loose cargos.

Coasters: These are small cargo ships that operate on feeder routes. They carry small number of cargo from small to big ports.

Ro Ro: This heavy weight ship is used to carry motor vehicles and they can load and unload goods quite quickly and easily.


Reefer: This cargo ship is specially designed to carry frozen items

Tankers: This cargo ship carries tankers of oil in bulk quantity.

In today's world, the cargo ships basically carry bulk quantity of oil apart from other cargos such as coal, grains, ores, concentrates, fertilizers and animal feeds. From a shipper's point of view, cargo ships have a lot more advantage in loading and unloading. But there are certain dangers in cargo ships too. Proper distribution of weight is a must. Improper weight distribution result in structural damage which in turn disturbs the balance of the ship.

Excessive and improper stability in a cargo ship can lead to cargo shift. These affect the normal roll of the ship and make it shorter and violent.
