Inter-city train services are express train passenger services which run for longer distances than normal commuter trains.
Inter City Trains services are very well developed in North Africa, although it is prone to get delayed or interrupted by common disturbances. Moroccan Railways and Egyptian National Railways which can run fast and most of the trains are air-conditioned linking all the major cities in these countries.
In South Africa the inter city trains has an extensive network run by Shosholoza Meyl, a division of Spoornet. The most famous inter city train services are the luxury Blue Train that runs between Pretoria and Cape Town, the Trans-Oranje running between Cape Town and Durban, and the Trans-Natal Express running between Durban and Johannesburg.
China Railways run the inter-city trains linking almost every town and city in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, and Hong Kong.
In India the inter-city trains are run by Indian Railways. In India the railways covers 63,000 km of rail routes and 6,800 stations. The Indian railway network is the world's third biggest after Russia and China and the biggest in the world in terms of passenger per kilometers.
Duong Sat Viet Nam runs the trains in Vietnam linking Hanoi, Hué, Danang, Nha Trang, and Ho Chi Minh City. In Cambodia one train run between Battambang and Phnom Penh on a weekly basis.
In South Korea all major towns and cities are linked by Korean National Railroad. In Japan there are six main regional railway companies collectively known as Japan Railways Group. Four JR companies operate the shinkansen or bullet trains that link cities like Niigata, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka.
In Australia, the national interstate network operated by Great Southern Railway links all Australian capital cities except Canberra and Brisbane. V/Line, CountryLink, and Queensland Rail operate all the intrastate inter-city trains that traverse shorter distances. In Sydney CityRail re-branded as intercity trains' runs a wide interurban system of four major routes from Sydney to Newcastle and the Central Coast, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands and the South Coast.
In Europe, many inter-urban trains that run long-distance are operated under the InterCity or simply IC brand. The term InterCity originated with British Rail's InterCity sector, but it went out of official use in the UK following privatization. The chief network of international express trains in Europe is called EuroCity, to differentiate it from the national InterCity networks and to specify its improved sustainability for international journeys even though some IC trains also cross borders. High-speed inter city railways have very few stops. In Great Britain, the inter-city rails are now operated by private companies like Virgin Trains and First Great Western.
In United States, the inter-city trains are operated by Amtrak that is far less dense than the European one. Northeastern United States, on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor is the most heavily used routes. One in every three transit through rail and two-thirds of the nation's railway users live in New York City. Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal, both in New York City are the two busiest passenger rail stations in the United States. |

In Argentina inter-city train services on a number of routes are run by Ferrobaires, Ferrocentral, and Trenes Especiales Argentinos. Long distance passenger trains in Argentina are experiencing a revival especially between major cities. In Brazil inter-city services operate on one route, from Vitória to Belo Horizonte. In Chile inter-city trains connecting Santiago to Concepción and Temuco are run by Empresa de los Ferrocarriles del Estado.
