Metro Rail in Asia is highly developed and provides important means of transport to the people. In India, the first underground Metro Railway was developed in Kolkata, extending from Tollygunj to Dum-Dum, which is located near Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose airport. Metro in Kolkata stretches over a length of 16.45 Kms with Seventeen Stations at every 1 km. The metro rail in Kolkata developed remarkably from 1972 to 1995, from Esplanade to Bhowanipur. The construction of Metro Railway Kolkata, from Esplanade to Bhowanipur was completed in 1984 with completion of full length in 1995. The metro in Kolkata is still expanding so that it can reach to more number of people. Metro railway in Delhi started in December, 2002 and the commercial services started from that time. The section between Shahdara and Tis Hazari has six stations and 8.3 Km long. The line 1 of the Delhi Metro system is 28 Km long. The metro rail in Delhi runs from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. with an interval of 8 to 10 minutes. The metro system has been designed to increase in times of operation and frequency. The trains are well advanced, comfortable and air-conditioned. The temperature within the coach is 29 degree Celsius. The metro in Delhi is trying to make its operation more advanced by integrating with other means of public transport. The Metro Rail Corporation of Delhi is trying to make the bus routes to act as its feeder services.

For this purpose The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has signed an agreement with the Delhi Transport Corporation. The Government of Delhi in collaboration with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana is on the process of starting an Integrated Rail Bus Transit System. This integrated transport system will be will provide transport between Delhi and its satellite towns. This Integrated Rail Bus Transit System will be built parallel to the existing railway lines and will be completely independent.


Shanghai metro is one of the rapidly expanding metro and the youngest metro of the world. It first started its service in 1995 from the Central Station to the southern suburbs. With very fast expanding network the metro in Shanghai has expanded its service to 228.4 km, with 162 stations and 8 lines, by 2007.

The metro rail in Asia in the major cities is on the process of expending to provide easy, fast, comfortable and convenient means of transport to the passengers.
